Time Tracking

I use Freckle to track my time. Hands down it is the best $12 I spend every month. It's easy to use. The weekly reports I create (see below) have helped me reach my hourly goals. It's made invoicing almost, dare I say it, fun. AND it's pretty to look at.

Plus. Yes, there is more! Freckle has this great view called Pulse. This view (see below) shows me a month at a time with great little pie charts on each day. The charts visually show me how I am using my time. The bigger the chart the more time I've worked that day. And then each project I worked on that day is shown by a piece of the pie. I use this information to delegate certain days for different kinds of work once I see a pattern form.

I love Freckle. And, if you are in need of time tracking software, I think you might too.

Fall Schedule

The reason I work at home
Where the work gets done. Main Work Space.
Garage Office
Champaign Public Library
Cafes & Coffee Shops
"Behold, children are a gift of the Lord." Psalm 127:3

Being a Mommy Freelancer is the most challenging job I've ever had. You have to balance two worlds simultaneously. As one of those worlds flutters around with extreme unpredictability the other screams for attention. You take a guess which is which.

And the hours! The longest hours known to man. As a Mommy Freelancer you are never off the clock. 24/7. 365 days. Repeat. I would surmise all parents of young children work these crazy hours. No matter if they work outside or inside the home.

Balance. Balance is the key to making this season of life beautiful. Everyone - mothers, fathers & children - need quality time for themselves, quality time together, time to work & time to rest.

This fall I've decided to purposefully schedule my rest time. Don't get me wrong I have office hours, but if I'm not careful those hours will steal my children's childhood. I define rest/off time as the time I will give myself permission to not think about work so I can be fully engaged in the moment.

PMS 3255: Nautical

Color The property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

My eye is trained to see color differently than the normal person. When I was a prepress operator at OEC Graphics I would painstakingly color correct client's projects to print in the perfect mix of either spot or process colors. To accomplish this I had to "see" a small percentage difference from one hue of, say blue, to the next.

I later took my prepress knowledge into a graphic design position. I used my color trained eyes to find perfect combination of colors for product lines at Horizon Hobby. I'd use tools like Color Hunter & books on color in hope of finding a magic combination. But I found that my uber sensitive eye still needed to tweak the hues to perfection.

As you may have seen I used my uber sensitive eyes to create a perfect combination of color for our next baby. I'm not going to lie. The teal in the mix isn't in my normal list of favorites. Part of my issue is I don't like how the word teal sounds when you say it out loud.

Just say it, "TEAL"

And come on. Is it blue? Or is it green?

But I've now moved past all that.

I hesitantly added teal to the baby's brand. And therefore, into my life. Once I did I saw it magically used as an accent color on the house where we pick up our CSA food.

That door convinced me to repaint our changing table Nautical. (Way more fun to say than teal.)

And just yesterday, I designed our baby's thank you cards. Using PMS 3255 as the accent color.

Teal, welcome to my life.

Bulls Eye: Define Your Target Market

I gave the below presentation at my BNI meeting a couple weeks back and wanted to share. Enjoy!

---

At Jessie Marie Studio we strive to educate through visual solutions.

You may think this means we simply make good looking logos, ads or websites. This is part of it. However, we also offer marketing consulting. This is where we help a client with a marketing strategy so they can be more successful with their marketing dollars. The first part of creating a marketing strategy is to define a client's target market.

Wikipedia's definition of a target market is: a specific group of customers that a business has decided to aim is marketing efforts & ultimately its merchandise or services towards.

Do you know who your target market is?

Where do they live?
Are they male or female?
Are they young families?
Or empty-nesters?
Where do they shop?
Where are they on the weekends?

The different categories we look at with a client are:

Geographic Location
   Where their customers live
Demographic and socio-economic status
   Gender
   Age
   Income
   Occupation
   Education
   Household size
Stage in the family life cycle
Phychographic
Similar attitudes, values & lifestyles - outdoor lovers, movie goers, church goers
Behavioral
Occasions, degree of loyalty - weddings, holidays, brand loyalty
Product-related
Relationship to a product - someone in need of a new roof, Harley Davidson drivers

One client I helped through this process was St. Andrew's Lutheran Church & Campus Center on the University of Illinois Campus. I was helping them create a marketing campaign for a lecture series they conducted this past school year. It included everything from emails to posters to church bulletin inserts to social media pieces. When I started working with them they wanted to use their marketing dollars to target "everyone."

When I hear anyone say that the first question I ask is: Are you Coca-cola?

Coca-cola does indeed targets "everyone." But think about it. Do they really? I would say they look at different segments all over the world & then create different marketing campaigns for each one. Different countries, different parts of countries, etc.

So I sat down with St. Andrew's and created the graphic above. We broke up all the different people they were trying target into a visual target. The center of the target are those people they wanted to put the most time & energy into.

You will see on the back side of the sheet which items focused on who from most important to least by these color coded indicators.

The star category of people are the lecture series biggest fans. These are the people who will promote your brand or in this case St. Andrew's event because they truly believe in it - not because they are getting paid a dime.

Now, when a company is not yet established with dedicated fans or wants to create a tribe of certain customers the star category would be who you want to target. For example, at Jessie Marie Studio we have recently decided to target individuals, companies or organizations that value great design & the great outdoors. This mix would align with our values - the phychographic segmentation - as a company. Giving us an opportunity to work with nature lovers who want to educate about that love.

By looking at a client's target market I will not only be able to create a great looking logo, ad or website. But a graphical product that speaks to the right people.

----

Shortly after I gave this presentation I read the following post on The Mogul Mom. She made a fabulous point about knowing your targets demographic and socio-economic status doesn't hold much power when it comes to sales, emotion does. I would have to say I agree. What do you think?

Day 25: Choose Your Own Adventure

31 Days of Adventure Day 25
Choose Your Own Adventure

"Every day we face various situations and circumstances that allow us to choose to take action (or take no action). There are the safe and comfortable choices (e.g., having our favorite cereal for breakfast).

There are choices we make out of habit (e.g., driving the same route every day to work). And there are choices we make that feel riskier and have an element of the unknown.

Today, we challenge you to choose adventure. Write your own story today."
- daily email prompt

Outcome of Choice Change #1

1. Yesterday was a full work day for me. I start my work day with a Morning Meeting. I head to Lake of the Woods in Mahomet armed with my camera & create beautiful photos. Instead of going to a spot I had scouted out over the winter I went to a new one. I ended up on the shores of the lake surrounded by flowers & butterflies.

Lesson Learned: Nature will never disappoint.

Blank form to fill out for Choice #2

2. Quarterly Sales & Use Tax Return. Not something I would call fun. Most days I decide to take no action on business nuts & bolts. But today since A. I was prompted to take action by this little 31 day experiment & B. Our quarterly Sales & Use Tax Return is due Friday I sat down for some quality time with the Illinois Department of Revenue. After two hours & multiple cookies to motivate myself to keep going I completed the form. The end result: I owed the State of Illinois ONE DOLLAR!

BUT I did create myself some color coded, understandable directions for next quarter. I'm sure I'll be thanking myself in July!

Lesson Learned: Completing difficult tasks is more rewarding than completing easy tasks.

Final Location of Choice #3

3. During work day lunches Jarrod & I will take a walk. Yesterday we took a different route than normal which also completed one of my errands for the week. Watch out! Multitasking. After lunch with Jarrod, instead of hiding out in a cafe & checking email, I headed over to Illini Grove Park to sit & breath before a client meeting.

Lesson Learned: Sunshine is magical.

Open road of Choice #4

4. My final off-beat decision was the choice to take the two lane highway to go pick up Cadence rather than the Interstate.

Lesson Learned: Always keep your windows down when possible.

Day 16: Witness the Painting of the Sky

31 Days of Adventure Day 16
Witness the Painting of the Sky

"Today's adventure is in three steps:

1. Today: Scout out a nice spot to see the sunrise.

2. Tonight: Before you go to sleep, set your alarm clock extra early.

3. Tomorrow morning: Get to your spot before the sun does.

Watch the sun rise."
- daily email prompt

I'm a failure. I didn't physically scout out a spot to see the sunrise. I turned off my alarm when it went off early this morning. And I didn't get to a specific "spot" by 6:23AM - current sunrise time.

When life doesn't go as planned: cry, pout & be negative. That's what this over tired, under exercised, pregnant girl did this morning. Not my finest moment.

Tuesdays have an interesting schedule. I go to the gym between 5:30 & 6:00 in the morning & then head off to my BNI meeting by seven. My only non-Mommy morning of the week. This morning I was going to squeeze in a sunrise too. I should have known something was going to go wrong.

As I said above, I didn't get up with my alarm. Then, I got all the way to the gym & realized I forgot my towel. Thank you Baby Brain. You've been really helpful lately. I started to cry. I headed home to shower before my meeting. Up & down Prospect I drove. All the while the sun was rising.

I entered the house. The clock read 6:23AM. I knew it was mocking me. I took a shower. Sulked that I missed my workout. And left.

On my way out of the driveway I stopped the truck. Rolled down the window & snapped the attached photo. It was pretty. The sun had promise for change.

I arrived ten minutes early for my meeting. Parked the truck pointing right into the sun. And didn't put my sun visor down so I could soak in the extreme brightness of hope the sun promised. I ate my breakfast & ever so slowly believed in that hope.

In Progress: Bike Love Painting #1

Bike Love was installed last Wednesday. Below is the final progression of Painting #1. Last you saw it was back in November. It went from the worst to the best in my opinion.

Painting #1: DONE!

Day 12: Listen to the Voices in Your Head

31 Days of Adventure Day 12
Listen to the Voices in Your Head

"Listen to the voices in your head. We all have them (right? Or is it just me?). Throughout the day, they tell us what we should and shouldn't eat, who we should or shouldn't talk to, and what we should and shouldn't do with ourselves. We don't even notice them most of the time—we just carry out their orders. Today, stop and really LISTEN to those voices with intention—as if they're coming from a friend or family member." - daily email prompt

The statements I found repeated in my head over & over were, "I don't have enough time." and "I have to finish this."

Really? What kind of forced schedule am I on? I'm a Mommy Freelancer. I make my own schedule. Whatever timeline I'm fighting I have made myself.

And that was it! I am constantly fighting myself.

Fighting for the perfect day. The perfect schedule. The perfect flow of events.

By 10 AM Snack Time I said to the voice, "I don't have to listen to you today! Today isn't going to be perfect!" And along came the best Tea Party Face Building Extravaganza Cadence & I have ever partook in.

My first face.

Cadence building her first face.

Enjoying some tea with her first face.

A piggy face by me.

Cadence's second face.

Cadence's "Mommy"

Mommy's "Cadence"

Cadence's "Daddy" Um. Ok.

Cadence giving "Daddy" a hug.

We spent an hour on Snack Time & nothing blew up. Actually the rest of the day went pretty dang awesome. Letting the day unfold naturally instead of inside my forced schedule was something I should really do more often. It's funny how it's taken 10 months of Mommy Freelancing to unlearn Corporate Land rules.

Light in Darkness

Since the middle of October, I start my Wednesday workday with a Morning Meeting. I spend about a half hour in the woods with my Canon Rebel Xti photographing what I see. Rain, fog & gray clouds have joined me on all but one morning. Today I stalled in the truck longer than normal. The gray days have become draining.

Life can become pretty draining too. From the outside it looks like all potential for joy & color have been lost. Much like the minutes before I force myself out of the truck with camera in hand. Then you dig in. You start connecting with your environment. You start building relationships. And suddenly a beautiful story starts to form. Color screams from the grayness. Joy over pours from your soul.

I found vibrant color and an overabundant amount of joy during my Morning Meeting today. Not only in he photos I was taking, but in the promise of Christmas. The promise that Jesus will put His light into my gray & dull life everyday.

"I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." John 12:46

May your Christmas weekend be filled with light, joy & color!
